Belly Breathe
Have you noticed that breathing is kind of important? Especially since it has been a focus for the last few months. But did you know that most people don’t breathe in the “proper” way?
Most people tend to breathe shallowly. You can tell they are breathing this way if you see their shoulders moving up and down with the breath. This type of breathing isn’t the most beneficial for you. Instead, breathing deep into your diaphragm will help oxygenate and calm you a lot more. You can tell you are breathing “correctly” when your belly moves in and out.
When I was in 7th grade choir, I learned to breathe correctly by lying on my back on the floor. Then, my choir teacher placed a book on my stomach, which I had to move up and down to show I was doing diaphragmatic breathing. Of course, you could also place your hands on your stomach and make sure they are moving in and out. But that isn’t as dramatic a demonstration, so do what’s best for you. 😉
We actually naturally breathe this way when we are sleeping. So throughout the day, take a moment to check your breathing. Are your shoulders turning into earrings by moving up and down? If so, stop and start taking some deep belly breaths. And if it helps, get a book and lie on the floor. Don’t worry what others may be thinking about you. It’s common knowledge that you’re just diaphragmatically breathing. 😉 If they didn’t know, get them to join you. We can all use a breathing break every now & then. 😁
